City founded in 1957 by the ex-dictator Alfredo Stroessner, it is the second most important city in Paraguay with a population of 150,000 inhabitants. Boasting approximately 3,500 shops, hundreds of street vendors, importers, cargo companies, exchange offices, the world’s best-known banks and the colorful craftsmanship, Ciudad del Este is a shopping paradise.
The great business movement attracted the attention of Arabs, Koreans, Chinese, Hindus, Pakistanis, Brazilians and Argentines who settled there with their businesses, transforming Ciudad del Este into a cosmopolitan center with dozens of different languages.
Mixed with these inhabitants, are easily found in the streets the Maká Indians who sell their colorful handicrafts, the only form of their subsistence. Often we see them installed on some sidewalk, with their products exposed and making the parts that are soon sold.
